[plug] setnu mode in emacs

Hi all, 

Under the vi editor, you can display line numbers by using the command 

    :set nu 

A similar effect can be done using emacs toggling the system variable 

    setnu-mode 

using M-x 


However because of the need to use a client's custom lisp program, I have to 
use xemacs at the moment, and xemacs does not seem to recognise setnu-mode. 

Does anyone know how to display line-numbers on xemacs?
