More info:  When I ctrl-c the attempt to run it and get back to work, one of the processes remains running and prevents gnome 2 from logging out.  If I select logout and confirm, it hangs X until I go to console and kill -9 the remaining OO process.  Then it all gets back to normal and continues logging out.  It is evidently waiting for something, but I don't know what to offer it .. except a kill -9.
