CUPS drives my Epson Stylus C41UX quite happily, also my SIL's Canon 
BJC3000 (both USB), various hp lasers (mostly JetDirect), lots of other 
things, including, yes, a DeskJet 500 (parallel).

CUPS claims to drive parallel, serial, USB, FireWire, LPD, IPP, FTP, 
socket (JetDirect) and probably, with an appropriate driver, GDI 
printers (but I've never seen that done, or even read about it).

Its main claim to fame is support for IPP, and it's configurable by a 
web browser (hit port 631).
