It's not a new concept, but it seems to never make it out of the prototype 
stage, and into the "widely used and well maintained" stage.

With the latest userland filesystem stuff (such as fuse), it shouldn't be too 
hard (says one with little technical knowledge or experience of low-level 
FS's ^_^), albeit not necessarily efficient.
