[plug] hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc

hi list,
  
 I am having some trouble with dvd players, xine and videolan.
Both advise turning on DMA  on the dvd device but when I try to do
that I get
[root at rubber]# /sbin/hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc
/dev/hdc:
 setting using_dma to 1 (on)
 HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
 using_dma    =  0 (off)


why would this operation not be permitted?
