[plug] apt-get died

hello all

apt-get decided to die just now. I dont think I did anything to provke
its death, but its dead. All I get is this error:

Reading Package Lists... Error!
E: Unable to parse package file /var/lib/dpkg/status (1)
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

I tried to update it but that just came up with the same error.

Does anyone get or has had this same error?
