Just ran into a similar problem today with /var/lib/dpkg/available
getting corrupted. Googled a solution - hope there is a file
available-old in the same directory, and copy it back. Looking now,
there's a status-old in that directory too - so I guess your best
bet is to copy that back if it exists.
