Don't know much about linux compatability but as far as hardware goes 
IBM & Fugitsu (???) are supposed to be the most reliable with Toshiba 
close behind according to the staff at cybershop.com.au. 
theregister.co.uk had a report some time ago about Dell laptops having 
problems but I don't know if it amounted to much and may just have been 
a UK local issue.
