[plug] GTK-1.2.0 or newer

  Good afternoon one & all.
  Trying to compile  xsane but get the following error message

   ERROR; GTK-1.2.0 or newer is needed for compiling xsane
          if you installed gtk as rpm make sure you also include
          gtk-devel


  did an apt-get update then an upgrade  but still get the above error message????
  Did an 'apt-get GTK-1.2.0' but found Debian Sarge  could not find a package.
  Looked at www.gtk.org have several choices download GTK-1.2 or GTK-2.2 plus others.

  recomendations please

  Are any conflicts to consider.
