I also have a PTP camera.  The messages are remarkably similar to the
ones that you see:

hub.c: new USB device 00:02.1-3, assigned address 3
usb.c: USB device 3 (vend/prod 0x40a/0x525) is not claimed by any active driver.

When I plug it in, though, Kamera/Gtkam/Gphoto detect it fine, but can't
talk to it except when they run as root :-(  Aargh! What am I doing
wrong, then?

I'd have thought the reverse actually, mount is setuid root for a reason
