Forget ext2, it sucks almost as bad as fat32 for this type of problem,
go for reiserfs.
I had a disk that started with a few hundred bad sectors (was a seagate
too!, but only 2G) Win98 crashed and reinstalled about 7 days. After
3rd time put Mandrake with ext2 on it, lasted around a month between
fsck's, but did lose some files at times. Put Mandrake 8.0 on it with
reiserfs and never had to fsck'd it for ~12 months when I replaced it.
Dont put swap or anything with a lot of continuous disk access on it
either.
