Yes. With a nice video card, it will even do stuff like transparent menus 
nicely. Do get the latest updates (including kernel) after you install it.

    urpmi.addmedia iiNet ftp://ftp.ii.net/linux/mandrake/updates/9.0/RPMS \
      with ../base/hdlist.cz
    urpmi.update iiNet
    urpmi --auto-select

I also dd the install CDs onto the drive and set them up as URPMI sources if I 
have the space; it's a great convenience on down the track.
