Thanks to both of you - yes Sol, I had the Xwindow system system and did 
run xf86config with entry of all the hardware parameters without siccess.
I also tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 which produced error 
messages which I did not understand. In the end I dumped the whole 
installation, reformatted the partitions and reinstalled a minimum 
system. Bingo!
Now I'm installing packages one by one as required, and struggling to 
get the system to recognise the modem but I won't worry the list again 
unless I'm completely stumped.
