It started a few years ago when eftpos became more mainstream and the
average retailer could afford it get it. A lot of Computer retailers
resisted the move to eftpos. So they had the advantage of cheaper
prices. Ultimately everyone buys the stuff from the same few places
(just about every bit of RAM i see is from DMA and the older stuff says
edge) so it all about the running costs of your business.
What one business sells for $3000 another business sells $3120 because
they have to pay the credit card company.

I've only been charged extra when purchasing computer gear, but there
may be other businesses that do this.
It seems bizarre that they are the only ones who decide to pass on the
cost to the consumer.
