It does sound naughty. When you "Add Printer" there should be a rudimentary list
of available printers. If you don't even get to the login popup then something
sounds uber-broken.

Under debian, the ppds for printers all live within /usr/share/cups/model
Have a look and see if the /usr/share/cups has directories:
banners charsets doc-root model templates
calibrate.ppm data fonts pstoraster

You may be able to recover by installing all of the _other_ printers:

#apt-get install cupsomatic-ppd (sounds very Wallace and Grommit, yes ? :)

My model directory has these dirs:
Alps Compaq Imagen Okidata Sharp epson9.ppd
Apollo DEC Infotec Olivetti Star laserjet.ppd
Apple Dymo-CoStar Kodak PCPI Tally okidat24.ppd
Avery Epson Kyocera Panasonic Tektronix okidata9.ppd
Brother Fujitsu Lexmark QMS Xerox stcolor.ppd
C HP Minolta Raven deskjet.ppd stcolor2.ppd
C.Itoh Heidelberg Mitsubishi Ricoh deskjet2.ppd stphoto.ppd
Canon Hitachi NEC Samsung dymo.ppd stphoto2.ppd
Citizen IBM Oce Seiko epson24.ppd

Happy New Year btw :-)
Harry
