Along with Sol's advice, the best way to get XF86-4 configured I've
found is to use the xserver-xfree86 package and to use the command:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

It has the majority of cards supported.  You'll see the config menus
when you install the package anyway - but if you want to run it again
later to configure it - that's the command.  You can do that with other
xservers too btw, i just prefer xserver-xfree86 for gettings things
going easily.
