sbmount mount (which is not samba) will mount IP address equally as well
as hostname on every machine I've used it on.

I had problems connecting to a 2K box recently because I had a domain
user on the 2K box and no local users, I made a local user with relevant
password and gave the share SPECIFIC permissions for that user.  The
default 'Everyone' security options wouldn't let me connect to the
share.
