[Note: if you are reading this in the archive, it is actually a
follow-up to the previous thread of the same name. My mail relay isn't
receiving messages from PLUG, so I can't reply to, or quote, previous
mail properly.]

I don't use Lyx, so I don't know precisely about what it can offer, but
(as someone else has suggested) there are many LaTeX ways of achieving
this.

Since LaTeX keeps track of the text, it is actually possible to modify
the referencing behaviour (if need/desired/appropriate).

Russell's idea is great. However, it does require that you put things
into the preamble rather than in the body text. If necessary, it is
possible to arrange things so that the commands don't have to go into
the preamble (i.e. use a mechanism similar to how tables of contents
work). Also, I assume Lyx won't display the text particular nicely (you
will just see the LaTeX command or something) -- I could be wrong. I
think it would be interesting to see this added as a LyX feature, if it
does not already exist.
