Regarding debian packages (not from source like you are doing) I dodgied
together a partial guide from various sketchy sources a fair while ago. 
I haven't read it for a LONG time, but I'm assuming it is still correct
... you might find it interesting/relevant.

There must surely be other better guides around now, but when I wrote my
one there wasn't anything of note, hence my efforts.
