Does the hard drive work on another machine?  Dodgy IDE controller
or BIOS settings?  (Seems unlikely if it's brand new, but....)

Does memtest86 find problems?

Does The Other Operating System install properly?

You said that Knoppix boots - can it access the hard drive properly?
Does Knoppix HD install work?
