Yep. 'man xmodmap' will tell you what you want, if remapping buttons is 
an acceptable solution (I can't see why not). If you make sure that the 
appropriate button remapping command gets run when you log in, all will 
be well.

xmodmap -p '1 3 2 4 5' for a 3 button mouse with wheel.
