You can also point out here that Debian supports a gentoo-like solution,
where you can install a source package and compile that. This means that
you can optimise for those applications that need it without giving up
the Debian way of doing things. (I've never needed to though.)

It depends on your needs. 

If you need a bleeding-edge machine, perhaps your statement is true, but
if you only care if it works - I'm not a linux developer, I write
web-software and I really just need my machine to stay up - you might
find that keeping up with the Joneses is really not all that important.

Again, it depends on your needs.
