yes - no problems Ctrl-Alt-F1 to F6

yes - the display manager is still running - it
complains if I try to start it

default was xdm which ran KDE
changed default to gdm 

Can start gdm/xdm from the command line - it switches
to F7 ok, but disappears if I crtl-alt-F? and back
again.
