This would be on the Debian box right? Assuming it is gnome 1.4:
- is sawfish-gnome installed?
- is there a /usr/bin/x-window-manager symlink to
/etc/alternatives/x-window-manager ?
- does update-alternatives --list x-window-manager list /usr/bin/sawfish
?
if no to any of them: dpkg --purge sawfish and sawfish-gnome and
reinstall them, then repeat.
If it still doesn't work, you could manually create the symlink
/usr/bin/x-window-manager to /usr/bin/sawfish and totally break any
remaining functionality of the alternatives system for window-managers -
but it might fix the problem :)
metacity on gnome2 required me to do this.

add the modules you are insmoding to the end of /etc/modules - 1 per
line.
