I got my Radeon 9700 Pro going with Red Hat 8.0 a couple of months ago
fine. I got it to work properly (i.e all resolutions and refresh rates
my monitor can handle) after downloading ATi's linux drivers.

I never tried it running any games, apart from Tux racer.
