[plug] mounting linux client on samba network

Hi Pluggers, 
 
I just cleansed a pc of 'doze with Mandrake 9.1 (which incidentally, the 
regular users are quite impressed with - plenty of eye candy). 
Everything was supersimple to set up except setting it up as a samba 
client. The shared printers weren't too difficult (thankyou cups) and I 
have eventually managed to mount the shared samba partition. But it 
seems to be read only, even though I have not specified this option. 
Anyhoo, I'm stumped. I think there's something wrong with the entry in 
/etc/fstab: 
//gw/public /mnt/public smbfs, user,sync,username=% 0 0 
 
(nb: the server's name is gw, and I have tried using various usernames 
to no effect so far.) 
 
Can anyone help?
