After noticing another mistake in that insmod string I now get the following in /var/log/messages:

May 4 00:48:56 debian kernel: usbserial.c: USB Serial support registered for Generic
May 4 00:48:56 debian kernel: usbserial.c: USB Serial Driver core v1.4
May 4 00:49:21 debian kernel: usbserial.c: USB Serial support registered for Handspring Visor
May 4 00:49:21 debian kernel: usbserial.c: USB Serial support registered for Palm 4.0
May 4 00:49:21 debian kernel: usbserial.c: USB Serial support registered for Sony Clié 3.5
May 4 00:49:21 debian kernel: usbserial.c: USB Serial support registered for Sony Clié 4.0
May 4 00:49:21 debian kernel: visor.c: USB HandSpring Visor, Palm m50x, Sony Clié driver v1.5
May 4 00:50:01 debian kernel: hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/2, assigned device number 2
May 4 00:50:01 debian kernel: usbserial.c: Generic converter detected
May 4 00:50:01 debian kernel: usbserial.c: Generic converter now attached to ttyUSB0 (or usb/tts/0 for devfs)

but still coldsync -p /dev/usbTTY0 just says

no device: sleeping

thanks again,

Chris
