no.

he *IS* using pppoe (or something similar) somewhere.

it is probably embedded into the ADSL modem/router he has. the router is
handling the pppoe magic rather than having a PC running rp-pppoe doing
it. (i have the Home version of that modem/router which DOES NOT have
this ability)

personally i feel iptables is much more robust than the firmware
filtering/NAT available within most DSL "routers" ;)

p.s someone mentioned before needing two network cards, one plugged into
the "network" side and one plugged into the DSL modem. just to throw in
2c this is NOT TRUE. you can use a single network card (was added/fixed
in rp-pppoe a fairly good while back)
