Ok, thanks. My PC here at work has Accel 2x with a Threshold of 4. If the
machine in question (at home) has the same, perhaps dropping the acceleration
will work. (I wonder what a <1 accel with no Threshold would do?)

No, I'm not using gpm. I tend to find gpm is more a hindrance than a help in
the way I use systems - although if gpm has more options for controlling
resolution, I may have to resort to it.
