Found the problem, it had to do with a firewall rule for MSN Messenger (mainly voice and video packets). Seems the rule also blocks google. I'll have a better look at it later as I need to get into what I was trying to do in the first place.

Initial followed by continutation? That sounds normal ;)

When you say "initial request", do you mean that the HTTP Request is
being made but an HTTP Response is not being issued, or are you talking
about things at the level of TCP connections? You raised this problem on
22 March and I provided a set of possible points of failure but I don't
recall if you provided us with information about what you discovered.
Some pertinent unsolved mysteries include:

 - are you getting the right IP address for www.google.com and
   www.google.com.au (should be 216.239.39.99)?
 - can you ping www.google.com?
 - can you telnet to www.google.com TCP port 80 and get a response
if you enter the line "OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0"?

Huh? How could you visit a site with a URL? :)
