Never had any problems (except that some specific job fail to produce
output, but I don't go into the details of why that is). Latest version
of CUPS I've used with parallel-port printers is 1.1.14 (which currently
works for me). Worked first time without any hassles whatsoever. Much
fewer problems than the HP software running under Windows 2000. The
printer is an HP and all jobs are PostScript. Maybe you could try
disabling language switching in the printer config or something. I do
seem to recall having to often SIGTERM or mayb even SIGKILL backend CUPS
processes for network-related CUPS backends when error conditions had
arisen, because they used to wait 'forever'.
