Supported = VMWare will guarantee it works and are more likely to
help you if it doesn't.

Linux is linux. I can say Debian works both as a host and guest OS,
with very little pain too.

All that's needed is your current kernel's source tree or headers so
it can rebuild its kernel modules. Same applies if you have a custom
kernel or a newer kernel on any of the "Supported" versions of
Linux.
