[plug] error msg "syntax error near unexpected token"

Sorry, not clear on what you mean .  Line 10 in the backup.sh is nothing more than a comment # Variables.
If you mean if I change to /dev/st0 for Destfile the answer is no. 
I get the following:

[root at rh9fs1 backup]# ./backup.sh 0                           <- first to create the datestamp file before doing the subsequent Level-1 backup 
./backup.sh: line 22: tar_backup: command not found
./backup.sh: line 25: tar_verify: command not found
./backup.sh: line 28: mail_report: command not found
