Had a situation very similar to yours and what I did was on a windows pc I had winscp32 on it. I was able to 1) copy the files tot he windows PC and delete the ones on the Linux system. You may want to do this. I was able to reset the attribute on the windows pc to r/w and access the files. If you have a Windows PC it's worth the try.

I have some (but not all of) the files in a directory that I cannot do
anything with. That is, even as root, an ls gives permission denied, as
does "chmod 644 *". However in a bash shell you can give the first few
letters and hit tab and get the completed file name. I downloaded the
files and copied them to their current location. Trying to open them
via a browser calling xpdf fails with an "unknown error", but xpdf will
open them if I cd to the directory and "xpdf filename" in a console.
Weird!, but the question is, how can I fix or delete these files? I
presume they have lost all permissions and now cannot be changed.
