For some reason it has calmed right down now and is its regular stable
self. I did install OAF(The GNOME Object Activation Framework) which
seems to keep it organised better. Not that I really know what OAF is...

Thanks for the tip. I was really wondering what was happened to killev.
I was using kill -9. 

1.4.5 is much nicer though I won't be going back to 1.2 or so.
