[plug] GDM hanging, leaving zombies

Thanks James, Bernard and Cameron for your help and ideas. They were 
helpful and much appreciated. Maybe I'll even be able to find out what 
was happening. As things stand, I have kdm running - quite happily by 
the looks - and some idea of where to start tracking down the source of 
the gdm problem.
