If the binaries are compatible, alien does a pretty good job.
I have used it on cinelerra and it's related utils, I also use it all
the time on win4lin.
If you are using it on something like a service or daemon that messes
with the rc.d dirs, then you may need to manually intervene after the
install and make a link or two, but nothing drastic. Other than that it
seems pretty seamless.
The trick for me was alien -c which tries to convert the pre/post
install scripts as well..
