from 2.4.18 the vlan code is the mainline.  all you need to do is
install the "vlan" package under debian.  There was a bug in the 2.4.18
code but the debian package includes the fix.  (it only affected you if
8021q as a module)

ATM there is no VTP support :(

The nice thing is your card itself doesn't need to support VLANs any old
NIC will work.
