Well one obvious thing to test (sorry if it's already been mentioned)
is to put the CDROM that was taken out back in (instead of the tape drive)
and see how that plays with the 2 HDs...
Not so useful unless you decide to put the time and energy into
sending someone on site.
One more wild hunch... perhaps the Tape Drive is not happy
(or the motherboard not happy with it) when it's a master rather
than a slave? I had an old CDROM once upon a time that just could not be
master of it's channel... Never found out why, but maybe it's a similar
problem...
