One for the archives, just in case anyone has the same problem I just had.

Task: Install Australian English myspell dictionary for use in OOo 1.0.2
on Mandrake 9.1. (The OOo version is the one that comes with Mdk9.1)
Step 1: download package from
http://rpms.mandrakeclub.com/rpms/mandrake-devel/cooker/ia64/Mandrake/RPMS/myspell-en_AU-1.0.2-0.20030329.1mdk.noarch.html
Step 2: install
# rpm -i myspell-en_AU
Step 3: close OOo (if it is open), and then open (e.g.) OOo Writer (may
have to wait 1-2 secs for thread to die, otherwise it won't properly
re-init).
Step 4: tools > options > language settings > writing aids; select
"OpenOffice.org MySpell SpellChecker" then Edit (or double click). you
can just close the dialog box because

Step 4 seems to be required for OOo to pick up the new dictionary. If
you don't do it, you get an error message, something about the
Australian English language not being supported by MySpell, regardless
of the fact that installing the rpm puts the files right next to the
other dictionaries (in /usr/share/dict/ooo/) and even adds an entry to
dictionary.lst.

It might be Mandrake's package system that is causing this, but then
again it is probably OOo. Hopefully it will be fixed in future versions
(may already have been) thereby rendering this message useless ;-)

One other thing, it appears that if you want to use the hyphenation
rules with AU English then you need to manually add an entry like this
into the dictionary.lst file:
HYPH en AU hyph_en
