Welcome to the list.  Ask as many foolish questions as you like, they 
have all been asked before (see the archives- www.cantech.net.au/plug/) 
and will be asked many times again ;-)  There are many tolerant and 
helpful people here.  If you feel so inclined a trip to the workshop 
held every month at the UCC at UWA is an excellent place to get hands on 
help.

If you're keen on debian you will need a good deal of patience and 
perseverance (possibly a trip to the workshop?) to get it going but 
knoppix gives you a good idea of what you can end up with.
