Nah, he could still be using encrypted passwords (and probably is?).  
Those reg entries relate to encrypting the communication channels I'm 
led to believe, something that Samba isn't capable of (could be a "yet" 
there though).

Its more than likely related to a configuration issue switching between 
Samba 2.2.x and 3.x.
