Starting to see the light, thanks to this link from a RedHat how-to...

Specifically it seems the initrd only needs the MODULE information and in 
LILO (or GRUB) config the actual kernel image name is specified, thus 
linking the two together.   Ya live 'n learn :-)

I'll cobble together some notes to contribute to the list later on, in the 
hope that it may avoid the same confusion for others.
