Actually it was an Intel mobo (I forget which chipsets) with and inbuilt
'AC97 sound chipset. I have since disabled the onboard sound in the BIOS
adn replaced it with an Aopen card and it is working much better.  

Have you seen it happen with the hardware you mentioned?
