Hi Bernd.

I came across the same problem when i install suse 9.1 on my laptop.
When i plugged in the usb hdd it would sometimes show and most time
don't.

In OpenBSD, when i plugged in the usb device (hdd) it would detect it
and prompt me that it was assigned as sd0 on the console screen. So from
there I disklabel sd0 to get the letter for the device and then mount it
normally.

Hope this helps in anyway.
