[plug] SCSI host adapter emulation ?

It seems that I need a /dev/sda or /dev/scsiO or something that should 
show up as scsi with
  cat /proc/scsi/scsi
but 'no devices found'

how do I acquire a /dev/scsi-something so that I can temporarily mount 
the scsi cdwriter from the command line without using a string in lilo ?
or am I looking at this the wrong way ?

There must be a way to read media codes from blank media without going 
backwards?
