[plug] auto-mounting cdrom and usb devices

Hi

I have installed MDK 10.0 from discs obtained at the installfest on
my Acer laptop. When I insert a CD or connect a usb device, its
filesystem is automatically mounted. Unfortunately they do not
always cleanly unmount.

I inserted a CD and tried to mount it manually. /etc/fstab contains:
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,noauto,ro,exec 0 0

I got the following message:
according to mtab
/dev/ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun/cd is already mounted on /mnt/cdrom

ls /mnt/cdrom shows an empty directory.
What process mounted it?

I want to completely disable automatic mounting. How? An automount
HOWTO file mentions two possibilities but neither seem to be running.

I have disabled supermount by hiding the module, but when I connect a
usb device a supermount line appears in /etc/fstab. I'm sure there
is a better/proper way to do it.

Any help will be appreciated.

Jim
