Have you thought about an actual database; PostgreSQL or MySQL for
example? You'd have to cobble together keywords, etc to act as an index.

If you're in the mood for a steam-hammer solution for cracking a walnut
have a bo peep at "protege" from Stanford Uni. Mailing list (warning:
VERY active) at

http://protege.stanford.edu/lists.html

To quote the website http://protege.stanford.edu/

"Protégé is an ontology editor and a knowledge-base editor.

Protégé is also an open-source, Java tool that provides an extensible
architecture for the creation of customized knowledge-based applications.

Protégé's OWL Plug-in now provides support for editing Semantic Web
ontologies."

I know of people who use this for amassing collections of radiology
reports, including details of the type of scanner used, its settings, who
the radiographer was, ... you get the idea. You'd likely have to be
prepared to pass on whatever knowlege you gained in its use, to your
grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc. Probably worth a look if only
for its OMG value :-) When I get the time (ha, ha) I want to implement
it for neurological image data for our researchers.

Cheers,
Denis
