Thanks for the replies, and pointing out the obvious.  I sometimes
wonder if I'm all there :-(

It is a timeout problem, but not network.  The computer has a damaged
floppy disk controller :-(((  The following is an extract from
/var/log/messages

Questions:
 Why is trying to set up the floppy for jim and not root?
 How do I tell the boot process not to look at the floppy?
 Why has the problem only started this last install (#2)?

I have found references to ide-floppy in modules.devfs, but the
comments at the top of the file indicate it is automatically
generated each time devfs is installed.
