Hi Ben,
I installed Sarge on a new machine today using the new installer. These
are generated weekly.
(http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/weekly/i386/sarge-i386-1.iso)
and it went very easily. It defaulted to a 2.4.26 kernel, which is close
to being up-to-date for a 2.4..
I don't know if the network install mini-CD images are as up to date,
but I guess that is of no concern anyway.
To make it go to sid, you need to edit /etc/apt/sources.list replacing
the "sarge" or "stable" references to "sid".
Then "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade"
One suggestion though, if you give the university computer club a ring,
someone there might let you plug into the LAN during the day (maybe
evening?), so you can install at 10Mb/s. I don't know UWA's LAN
situation, so I don't know if you have mirror access from around the
uni. Anyone know?
HTH
